April Maxey is a director born and raised in San Antonio, Texas. April’s short film Work, which she wrote and directed as a part of AFI’s DWW+ program, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and went on to screen at Tribeca, Palm Springs Shortfest, and Inside Out, and Outfest, where it won the Oscar-eligible Grand Jury Prize for Outstanding US Narrative Short.

April’s feature screenplay for Work was selected for the WIF x Sundance Financing Intensive, the NALIP Feature Media Accelerator, the Sundance x One House Fund, Film Independent’s Fast Track finance market and the 2025 Gotham Week Project Market.

April has been a Sundance Uprise Fellow, a Sundance x Adobe Women to Watch Fellow, an alumna of the Warner Bros Discovery Directors Access program and the Berlinale Talents Short Film Station. Her short films have collectively screened at over 75 festivals in 18 countries and won 10 awards internationally.

April is most interested in working on stories that center underrepresented perspectives and explore the complexities of queer intimacy, grief, and healing. April’s directing approach is informed by her years working as a director of photography and editor. With a background in visual arts, she has a particular appreciation for the emotional impact of light and color. She holds a BFA in Film from Pratt Institute.
